Harish-chandra Research Institute (HRI) is a Research Institution, Named After the Mathematician Harish-chandra, and Located in Prayagraj (Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh. It is an Autonomous Institute, Funded by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India.

Research at HRI is Focused on Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. In the Last Couple of Decades, the Institute Has Contributed Significantly to Both Research and Training in Physics & Mathematics. The Academic Community at HRI Consists of Over 35 Faculty Members, 30 Post-doctoral Fellows, and 80 Graduate Students.

The Awards Bestowed Upon the Faculty Includes 1 Dirac Medalist, 1 Padma Bhushan and 5 Bhatnagar Awardees. Around 25 of the Alumni of the Institute Hold Faculty Positions in Premier Scientific Institutions of the Country.

The Institute Has a Graduate Programme Leading to the Ph.D. Degree. Degrees for the Programme Are Awarded by the Homi Bhabha National Instituteभौतिकी के स्नातक कार्यक्रम में नामांकन विभिन्न संस्थानों के सौजन्य से आयोजित संयुक्त प्रवेश स्क्रीनिंग परीक्षा (JEST) तथा साक्षात्कार के माध्यम से तथा गणित के स्नातक कार्यक्रम में नामांकन NBHM अनुसन्धान अध्येतावृत्ति परीक्षा तथा साक्षात्कार के माधयम से होता है। इसके अतिरिक्त संस्थान में पोस्ट डॉक्टोरल अध्येतावृत्ति के लिए तथा विभिन्न स्तरों पर अतिथि वैज्ञानिकों को आमंत्रित किया जाता है।

The Institute Started in 1975, on an Endowment From the B.s. Mehta Trust, Calcutta. Indeed, Until October, 2001, the Institute Was Named the Mehta Research Institute.

During Its Initial Stages, the Institute Was Managed by Prof. B.N. Prasad, and Later, by Prof. S.R. Sinha, From the University of Allahabad. The Formal Leadership Structure of the Institute Came Into Being With Prof. P.l. Bhatnagar, Who Took Charge, as the First Director, From Prof. Sinha. After Prof. Bhatnagar, the Stewardship of the Institute Returned to Prof. Sinha, Until January 1983, When Prof. S.S. Shrikhande of the Bombay University Joined the Institute as the Next Director.

प्रो. श्रीखंडे के कार्यकाल में संस्थान के भविष्य के संबंध में परमाणु ऊर्जा आयोग के साथ चल रही वार्ता निर्णायक मोड़ पर पहुँची। परमाणु ऊर्जा विभाग ने इस मुद्दे पर अध्ययन के लिए एक पुनरीक्षण समिति का गठन किया। समिति के रिपोर्ट के अनुपालन में सन 1985 में उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार ने संस्थान के लिए भूमि उपलब्ध कराने हेतु अपनी सहमति प्रदान की तथा परमाणु ऊर्जा विभाग ने आवर्ती तथा अनावर्ती दोनों प्रकार के व्यय हेतु वित्तीय सहायता प्रदान करने का वादा किया।

जनवरी 1992 में झूँसी, इलाहाबाद में संस्थान हेतु 66 एकड़ भूमि अधिग्रहण की गई। संस्थान के संक्षिप्त इतिहास में प्रोफेसर एच.एस.मणि द्वारा संस्थान के निदेशक के रूप में पद ग्रहण करना भी महत्वपूर्ण रहा। प्रोफेसर मणि के आगमन के पश्चात 1996 में झूँसी स्थित नये परिसर में संस्थान की गतिविधियों में तेजी आयी और तब से तीव्र गति से विकास जारी है।

नौ वर्षो के प्रतिष्ठित कार्यकाल के बाद प्रोफ़ेसर मणि अगस्त 2001 में सेवामुक्त हुए और प्रोफ़ेसर आर. एस. कुलकर्णी ने निदेशक का प्रभार संभाला। प्रोफ़ेसर कुलकर्णी के कार्यकाल के बाद, प्रोफ़ेसर अमिताव राय चौधरी 19 जुलाई 2005 से 15 मई 2011 तक निदेशक रहे। प्रोफ़ेसर अमिताव राय चौधरी प्रोफ़ेसर के कार्यकाल के बाद, प्रोफेसर जयंत कुमार भट्टाचार्य 29 अप्रैल 2012 से 9 अप्रैल 2017 तक निदेशक रहे । प्रोफ़ेसर पिनाकी मजूमदार 10 अप्रैल, 2017 से 31 जनवरी, 2024 तक निदेशक थे । प्रोफ़ेसर दिलीप जतकर 1 फरवरी, 2024 से वर्तमान कार्यवाहक निदेशक हैं । संस्थान गणित और सैद्धांतिक भौतिकी के विविध क्षेत्रो में मौलिक अनुसन्धान के प्रति समर्पण के साथ आज भी लगा हुआ है। अनुसन्धान कार्य संकाय सदस्यों, शैक्षणिक अतिथि सदस्यों, पोस्ट डाक्टरल तथा पी एच डी छात्रों द्वारा कार्यान्वित किया जाता है।

भावी गतिविधियाँ

HRI Seeks to Expand Its Activities. New Additions Are Made to the Faculty Every Year. We Expect the Faculty Strength to Rise to 50 in the Current Phase of Development. The Number of Graduate Students, and of Post-doctoral Fellows, Will Increase Correspondingly.

We Also Hope to See More Interaction Between the Institute and the University System in the Country. Already, We Have Various Programmes Which Enable Undergraduate and Graduate Students, From Various Universities, to Visit HRI for Periods Ranging From a Few Weeks to a Couple of Years. We Envisage Expansion in Such Programmes Over the Next Several Years.
