हरीश-चंद्र रिसर्च इंस्टीट्यूट (एचआरआई) की स्थापना 1975 में मेहता ट्रस्ट के उदार उपकार के परिणामस्वरूप मेहता रिसर्च इंस्टीट्यूट के नाम से की गई थी। अपने शुरुआती वर्षों में संस्थान ने गणितीय विज्ञान में अनुसंधान को बढ़ावा देने के लिए एक छोटे केंद्र के रूप में काम किया। 1992 में एक बड़ा मोड़ आया जब भारत सरकार के परमाणु ऊर्जा विभाग (डीएई) ने संस्थान को वित्त पोषित करने का फैसला किया और गतिविधियों का तीव्र गति से विस्तार होने लगा। तब से थोड़े ही समय में, एचआरआई गणित और सैद्धांतिक भौतिकी में अनुसंधान और स्नातकोत्तर प्रशिक्षण के लिए भारत में अग्रणी संस्थानों में से एक के रूप में उभरा है। वर्तमान में संस्थान में किसी भी समय लगभग 30 स्थायी संकाय सदस्य, लगभग 30 पोस्टडॉक्टरल फेलो और 150 पीएचडी छात्र होते हैं। एचआरआई में भौतिकी अनुसंधान खगोल भौतिकी, संघनित पदार्थ, उच्च ऊर्जा भौतिकी, क्वांटम सूचना और स्ट्रिंग सिद्धांत पर केंद्रित है। गणित अनुसंधान मुख्य रूप से बीजगणित, विश्लेषण, ज्यामिति और संख्या सिद्धांत पर है।

The Institute Runs a Regular Bus Service Between the Railway Station and the Campus. To Avail This Service Exit the Station in the Civil Lines Side of the Station. The Bus Stop is Close to the Car Parking Lot. Hri Buses Are White in Colour, Medium Sized and Have the Institute Name Written on Them.
